Last Frames With Fuji FP-100c Instant Film

I woke up this morning thinking about how much I really miss Fuji FP-100c instant film. It is such a shame that Fuji decided this film stock wasn’t profitable any longer because as far as I’m concerned it was the best instant film ever made by a wide margin. Fantastic colors, consistent performance, and a reasonable price always made it a go-to film stock for me.

One of my favorite things to do with Fuji FP-100c was to rescue the negative side of the image. Instant film was always designed to give the photographer an immediate positive print, but with Fuji it was easy to keep the negative side as well. All it took was a dab of bleach, a cheap paint brush, and a bit of patience. Simple. In many ways this quality made Fuji FP-100c the cheapest color film on the market because you didn’t have to pay any developing costs to get a negative. How cool was that? Fuji truly had a magical product on their hands and it is such a shame it no longer exists.

These images represent some frames from the last pack of Fuji FP-100c I ever exposed. By the time I got around to using it the film was significantly expired so there are a lot of color shifts going on here. I probably shouldn’t have waited so long to expose this pack of film, but once Fuji announced FP-100c was discontinued I became afraid to expose my last few packs on hand. Even with the color shifts, I still like the resulting images. Color shifts have always been part of the fun with any instant film as far as I’m concerned. It’s not about complete accuracy to the original scene.

Camera used was my Mamiya RZ67 with an instant film back. I still have the back in the vein hope that someone will pick up where Fuji left off and create a peel part instant film again. I know there is a snowball’s chance in hell that will happen, but hey, I suppose you never know. After all, Polaroid came back from the dead and seems to be going strong and I never thought that would happen either.

Olympia SG-1 on Polaroid SX-70

I have a respectable collection of typewriters in my home and this beast of an Olympia SG-1 is probably my favorite. It forever sits on this little desk in the corner where I punch out letters and journal entries and probably annoy my neighbors with the noise. Anyone who knows anything about typewriters will tell you that the Olympia SG-1 is a massive machine. I actually have trouble lifting it all on my own. It’s a solid hunk of metal that gives off the impression one day it will grow its own consciousness and take over the planet.

When this machine came to me it was inoperable and full of rat shit and dirt and decades of dried oil and dust. I spent two weeks pulling it apart, cleaning it, tinkering, and watching YouTube videos figuring out how to fix it. Nearly every single key was stuck and the majority of the work was just plain old elbow grease with an old toothbrush trying to get the gunk and years worth of grime off every individual part. Now with a fresh ribbon it types like it was new again and will probably continue to type for another century at least, hopefully long after I’m gone.

Now it makes words again. Not very good words mind you. But my words. I try to make it a point to type something on it every single day. It reminds me that the words we speak, the thoughts we give, don’t have to exist purely in this virtual space we call the internet. It’s ok, even heroic in a way, to commit words and thoughts to paper and not share them with anyone but yourself. Or if you do share them, do so with a small and more intimate audience.

Fuji FP-100c, Last Frames

Yesterday around sunset I exposed some of the last frames I have of Fuji FP-100c instant film. It was a very bittersweet moment for me. I’ve been a big fan of Fuji peel apart films for many years and Fuji seems more than content with letting this unique film stock just simply die off. That’s just too bad because it really is quite beautiful.

This image is a direct scan of the reclaimed negative side of the print. It always surprised me that more people didn’t know it is very easy to reclaim the negative with Fuji peel apart films. Just a dab of bleach, a cheap brush, and a lot of water and you have an instant color negative that you can easily scan and enlarge like you would with any film negative. The colors always tended to be more muted and warmer on the negative side vs. the positive print which I quite like.

The pack of film I used to expose this image was definitely showing signs of being too expired. On some of the print the emulsion just slipped right off when I peeled the film apart. I have one more pack of Fuji FP-100c in my refrigerator and I better use it soon before it gets to be so expired that it is useless.
